Just to prove my point to Dakota, I made sure to have a little fun while she was gone—Just a little harmless flirting with the scantily clad shifter ladies that were hanging around our base.

Her attitude towards me was heartbreaking at first, but after she spent that night with me on the couch—I knew she wasn’t entirely done with me. She still felt all the same things I did. She was just trying to play games. Well‌‌…I could play games all day long if that's what she wanted. And honestly, it kind of turned me on.

I made a point to be talking in close quarters with the hot shifters when Dakota and Fox finally returned with all of the supplies they had picked up. I knew by the way she glared at me from the moment they walked in that it got to her. Good, I thought. That was my only motivation for doing it anyway, and man did it ever work.

After torturing her a little longer with a few blatant displays of flirtation, I broke away to find her in the corner by the supply shelves—away from everyone else. Most importantly, that Fox jerk wasn’t around to stick his nose in our conversation.

“I see you had a good time while I was gone,” she quipped. The irritation in her tone was obvious.

“And what about you?” I asked, leaning in close. “Did you behave yourself?”

A coy smile curled on the edges of her lips. “Not that it’s any of your business, but it looks like you misbehaved more than I did. We just talked and picked up the stuff. That’s it.”

I dared to brush a strand of hair away from her face, trailing my touch along her cheek. “I still think it’s my business. And things are not always as they appear to be. I have to remind myself of that with you all the time.”

“Oh, is that right?” She laughed, not shying away from my closeness or my touch.

I nodded, smiling back at her. “Oh yeah, sweetheart. If I took it personally every time you tried to push me away, this thing between you and me would have been over a long time ago. Thankfully, I know better.”

“Typical,” she huffed. “You always think you know everything.”

I closed the last of the gap between us, inching dangerously close to her lips with my own. “Tell me I’m wrong in this case.”

Her big lashes fluttered and her lips parted, but she said nothing.

“You can’t, can you?” I teased.

Her bright eyes drew me in closer until, finally, our lips touched. I kissed her with soft tenderness, testing the waters of just how far she’d give in. She was tense, but not pulling away. She opened her mouth wider, inviting me in‌‌…and I was all too willing to accept the invitation. I rolled my tongue across hers, relishing in the taste that I had been craving ever since we were torn apart.

Even if she went back to hating me for weeks, that one small taste was all I needed to get me by until she was ready to open up again.
